Remember the first time you got your current PC or the first time you installed a new operating system on your computer. the performance was strong, and it tends to run fast. But that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.

When your PC starts to malfunction, having too many programs installed on it could be the issue, it could also be malware or viruses. All of these tend to make computers act up. Whatever the problem is, there are ways to maintain your PC for optimal performance. Here is how to keep your PC working at an optimal level.

  1. Clean up your hard disk for an optimal performance.

You need to leave some space on your Hard Drive if you want your computer to work efficiently. The first thing you should do when your computer starts acting up is to clean the Hard drive. You can use the Add or Remove feature on your PC to uninstall some programs taking space on your Hard Disk.

  1. Defragment Hard Drive.

Defragmenting your hard drive should be done monthly. Doing this leads to faster disk access time and improved system performance. There are some tools designed to help you with the defragmentation process.

  1. Disable unwanted Programs.

Some programs are designed to launch once you start your PC, this program is known as Startup Programs. So, one of the ways to make your PC work optimally is to prevent these startup programs from launching. Use the task performance feature to view these programs and stop them from launching.

  1. Add More Memory.

One of the reasons why your PC is working slow is simply because the RAM is not enough. Adding more RAM will help provide a boost for your system. There are some things you need to consider before expanding your RAM. For instance, the processor needs to be high, you need to know the number of memory banks the motherboard has.

  1. Update your Windows and Software.

Keeping your Windows and Software up-to-date helps to keep your PC at an optimal level. Make sure your operating system, drivers (graphic/sound) drivers, software including games are up to date with the latest security updates and the right patches. Installing new graphics drivers or the latest patch will resolve any performance issues encountered when installing new games.

  1. Search and destroy viruses and spyware on your PC.

You can search for viruses, malware on your system by running a scan on your antivirus tools or the Windows defender. There are lots of tools out there you can make use of. SmadAV, Avast, AVG are some of the free antivirus tools out there that can be easily accessed.

  1. Clean your PC for a better performance.

Dust can affect your PC’s performance. You should remove accumulated dust inside and out. The first step is hitting the fans (exterior) wit compressed or canned air. You should also open the case put out the dust on the heat sinks and fans that are around the processor and graphics cards. This should be done monthly.
